Testudo Hermanni Hermanni Leucistica

Testudo Hermanni
Testudo hermanni hermanni leucistic.
Pictures, captive keeping, origin, diet and breeding:

Testudo hermanni hermanni leucistic it’s a special tortoise, thinking well we could say it’s very special one.
Leucism its a genetic variation due to a recessive gene, who gives a white colour to the skin and shell of normally darker animals, it’s a form of incomplete albinism as eyes remains dark, on the contrary of albino individuals.
Testudo hermanni leucistic has to be considered a chromatic mutation who makes the animals completely white but with dark eyes, sign of their outdoor life attitude as “normal coloured” animals. the reason of this colour it’s a gene who normally is recessive, but that in this case becomes dominant as both exemplars carry the same.
This is confirmed as once the two leucistic exemplars of opposite sex mated, they produced, only in the first year, 10 individuals of the same colour of the parents.

On the other hand for a reptile, more precisely a tortoise who needs the sun for many hours every day to carry on their regular activities, real albinism (white skin and ed eyes) would be an handicap, in fact there is not any real albino tortoise in the wild as it would be impossible for them to expose to the sun, therefore they would die within few day or weeks.

In the specific, these exemplars are coming from Puglia (more precisely Gargano area). are strong animals with a fast growing rate. they adapt very well to climates northern of their range, like north of Italy, where they can graze on our grass, but they must be kept on open sunny gardens without high trees to make shadow and you must make sure that even during winter sun rays will reach their spot to mitigate the hibernation.
They are not shy at all and their sun exposition is the same as the normal coloured exemplars. their growing rate is extremely fast, the 10 young tortoise born in the 2008 weighted 10 g at hatching and 100g after one winter housed indoor.
They are great breeders, bigger female lays twice a year with a clutch size of 5 eggs, where all of them proved to be fertile.
This result is a prize for me and for the effort I put into breeding and caring of this species and it gives a touch of beauty to my collection that includes other Mediterranean species.
